We are developing new computational tools that allow children to create their own musical instruments -- enabling children to not only think about music and express themselves musically in new ways but also reflect on the rich interplay between musical, engineering, and scientific ideas in the activity of designing and constructing their own musical instruments. This construction kit extends the Cricket family of devices to include a "music brick" and an array of new sensors specially designed to enable the creation of a wide range of musical instruments, ranging from traditional to exotic.
We are also developing an integrated software environment, including music composition and editing tools and a new visual programming language for describing not only what sensors are used as controls, but also how their readings map to musical and kinetic outputs.
