Making a Programmer Board

Version 2.2

The board layout is shown above. Components are inserted down from the top layer (shown in pink); the label "v2.2" is on the top, and the words "THE FRED AND BRIAN PIC PROGRAMMER" are on the bottom. Here's the parts list, with Digi-Key part numbers.

Assembly Tips

  • Mount smaller components first; largest last.
  • For polarized components (e.g., LEDs, ICs, tantalum capacitors, etc.), the convention is the negative lead goes in the square hole.
    • LEDs: shorter lead is negative. This goes in the square hole.
    • Capacitors. Usually the + lead is marked. This would go in the round hole.
    • ICs. Pin one (the notch) goes in the square hole.
  • PNP transistors are 2N3906.
  • NPN transistor is 2N2222.
  • For the 5v regulator (labeled 78L05), a LM2931Z-5.0 will also work.
  • PWR LED is red, PGM LED is yellow, SER LED is bi-color red/green (looks clear).
  • Resistor packs are non-polarized (doesn't matter which way they go), but don't mix up the 1K (labeled 103) and the 10K (labeled 104). Make sure to use the isolated (pack of 5) and not the common-lead (pack of 9) type. The isolated type is usually labeled with a "V".
  • For the power adapter, you MUST use a 12v, 500 mA, center negative, DC adapter. A popular model of this sort is the Panasonic KXA11. If you use a different adapter, the programming voltage on the PIC might be too high and cause damage!
